Verschil relative pronouns

That kan zowel voor personen als voor zaken gebruikt worden, terwijl who alleen voor personen kan en which alleen voor zaken kan gebruikt worden.

Zo kom je tot een situatie dat je zowel that als who kan gebruiken om “die” te vertalen naar het Engels:

Jason is the man that fixed my window.

Jason is the man who fixed my window.

 

Wanneer gebruik je whose – vertaling whose?

Whose is een betrekkelijk voornaamwoord dat persoonlijk bezit aanduid.

De vertaling van “whose” is “wiens”.

Bijvoorbeeld:

This is Laura, whose brother went to college with me.

This is the man whose son got hit by a bus.
